The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, commonly known as Proposition 65 (or Prop 65), has been in force in California since 1986. It requires companies to indicate the presence of chemicals recognised as hazardous in consumer products by means of a specific label (Warning Label).

The law aims both to protect California’s drinking water sources from toxic substances and to reduce or eliminate consumer exposure to these substances through consumer products distributed on the local market (more than 900 substances are listed and regularly updated on the Government’s website).

Proposition 65 is the Californian counterpart to the European REACH regulation: it also aims to protect consumers and the environment and therefore to eliminate the most dangerous chemicals used in the manufacture of consumer products.
