GOTS
GOTS = Global Organic Textile Standard
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the result of a collaboration between the main players in the field of standardisation and aims to define requirements recognised worldwide, thus guaranteeing the biological quality of textiles from the harvesting of raw materials, from socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing to the labelling itself in order to offer a reliable guarantee to the consumer.
This certification means that:
- Only textile products containing a minimum of 70% organic fibres can be GOTS certified.
- The chemical inputs used, such as dyes and additives, must comply with a number of environmental and toxicological criteria.
- Production and processing systems must also comply with environmental rules.
- A functional wastewater treatment plant is mandatory for any wet treatment units used and all manufacturers must comply with a number of social criteria.
- GOTS is strict on water consumption, farming techniques (prohibiting insecticides and fungicides) and cotton harvesting.
