B Corp
Created in 2006 in the US, the B Corp label (Benefit Corporation) is a certification granted to commercial companies that meet the social and environmental governance requirements and that are in compliance with the required accounting and transparency requirements.
The philosophy of this label is perfectly expressed in its slogan: “Don't try to be the best company in the world but the best for the world.”
This certification is managed by the American NGO B Lab. The label can be acquired by responding to a detailed online questionnaire (the B Impact Assessment) that is completely free and widely accessible. The questionnaire contains approximately 200 questions on governance, employees, accounting, environmental impact and even on the company's business model. To be granted the label, the company needs to score a minimum of 80 points and be re-evaluated every two years.
B Corp has been operating in Europe since 2014 and originally started with small and medium-sized companies. Recently, this initiative has also been spreading to multinational companies such as Danone, Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s.
Since its creation, B Corp has quickly become the most prominent corporate social responsibility (CSR) label in the world and seems to be perfectly in tune with consumer expectations regarding corporate behaviour.
